Reliable in Character. Unpredictable in Strategy.

One of the most interesting lessons I have taken from studying the Laws of Power is this:

People should be able to trust who you are but they should not be able to predict every move you make.

In business and in life, we naturally develop patterns.

We respond the same way.
We negotiate the same way.
We attend the same meetings.
We approach the same people.
We use the same marketing strategies.
We solve problems using the same methods.

Over time, these patterns become comfortable.

But sometimes, comfort becomes a limitation.

If people can completely predict your behaviour, your decisions and your next move, they can also prepare for it.

This is where the wisdom of strategic unpredictability becomes valuable.

But I want to make one distinction very clear:

Being unpredictable does not mean being unreliable.

Your character should be predictable.

Your integrity should be predictable.

Your commitment should be predictable.

Your professionalism should be predictable.

But your strategy, creativity, opportunities and next moves can remain flexible and evolving.

As real estate professionals, this can make a significant difference.

If you are an agent, don’t let your market know that you will always negotiate the same way.

If you are a developer, don’t assume that the same marketing strategy will work for every project.

If you are an agency owner, don’t build your entire business around one method of generating clients.

If you are a marketer, keep learning, testing and improving instead of becoming dependent on one campaign.

If you are an investor, don’t limit yourself to the same type of opportunity simply because it worked yesterday.

And if you are a business leader, don’t let your organization become so predictable that it stops evolving.

The real lesson is:

Keep your purpose consistent, but keep improving the way you reach it.

At the Real Estate Business Club, we believe that a strong professional should continuously develop.

Learn something new.

Meet different people.

Explore new markets.

Build new relationships.

Test better offers.

Improve your systems.

Develop new skills.

Create new collaborations.

And when the market thinks it has understood your approach, keep growing.

This does not mean changing everything every week.

It means refusing to become stagnant.

There is a big difference between inconsistency and evolution.

Inconsistency destroys trust.

Evolution creates advantage.

Your clients should know that you will deliver what you promise.

Your partners should know that you will honour your commitments.

Your team should know what values guide your decisions.

But nobody needs to know exactly what your next strategic move will be.

That is where professional flexibility becomes powerful.

And this principle applies beyond business.

Sometimes we become predictable even in our personal lives.

We keep repeating the same routines.

We keep thinking the same way.

We keep surrounding ourselves with the same people.

We keep responding to problems with the same reactions.

Then we wonder why our results don’t change.

Perhaps the answer is not always to work harder.

Sometimes we need to change the pattern.

Learn a new skill.

Start a new conversation.

Enter a new environment.

Build a new relationship.

Explore a new opportunity.

Challenge an old assumption.

Try a different approach.

Your next breakthrough may be hiding behind a behaviour you have never tried before.

This is one of the reasons I value the REBC ecosystem.

When developers, builders, agents, marketers, investors, consultants and business professionals come together, new possibilities emerge.

One conversation can introduce you to a new market.

One relationship can introduce you to a new opportunity.

One collaboration can change your business model.

One idea can completely change the way you approach a problem.

You don’t have to predict the future. You have to remain capable of adapting to it.

So, as professionals, I would encourage every REBC member to ask themselves:

Have I become too predictable?

Am I using the same strategy simply because it is familiar?

Am I learning fast enough?

Am I exploring new opportunities?

Am I building relationships outside my usual circle?

Am I developing capabilities that my competitors don’t have?

Am I improving my systems—or simply repeating old habits?

And perhaps the most important question:

What is one pattern I need to break to reach my next level?

Don’t become unpredictable in your values.

Become unpredictable in your growth.

Let people know that you are trustworthy—but never let your own habits become a prison.

Be consistent in your character.

Be flexible in your strategy.

Keep learning.

Keep evolving.

Keep creating.

Keep moving forward.

Because in a rapidly changing real estate market, your greatest advantage may not be knowing exactly what happens next.

It may be having the ability to respond better than everyone else when it happens.

That is the kind of professional mindset we want to cultivate within the Real Estate Business Club.

Reliable in character.
Flexible in strategy.
Unpredictable in growth.
